Webster Groves, Missouri is a suburb of Saint Louis, Missouri with a population of 23,000. Webster Groves was named after Daniel Webster, a politician from New England. Webster Groves is an affluent community and ranks forty-first in per-capita income among cities in Missouri.
Webster Groves sits just outside the city limits of Saint Louis, and ten miles from the downtown district. This area of the country was claimed by the Spanish and then owned by the French who sold it to the United States as part of the Louisiana Purchase.
In the first part of the 1800’s, the Spanish granted land to settlers. Most of the land that is today Webster Groves was part of a land grant of six thousand acres given to Gregorie Sarpy is 1802. The town of Webster Groves covers about 5.9 square miles today. Webster Groves sits with Shrewsbury on its east border, Maplewood, Brentwood and Rock Hill on the northern border, Glendale, Oakland and Crestwood on the west side, Afton and Marlborough bordering the south end.
The Pacific Railroad line trailed through Webster Groves helping bring people to the area to develop it. At the end of the 1800’s, Saint Louis was becoming overcrowded and the city’s residents started to move out of the city in search of a quieter home with more elbow room. The subdivision Webster Park was built in 1892 and enticed people to move to Webster Groves by promoting the area as the “Queen of the Suburbs”. Webster Groves advertised luxurious housing in a country setting along with a short commute to work in Saint Louis. Since that time, Webster Groves has continued to attract suburbanites to its many neighborhoods.
Webster Groves was featured in a television documentary titled 16 in Webster Groves in the 1960’s. Jonathan Franzen, author of The Discomfort Zone, a memoir, wrote that the documentary portrayed Webster Groves High School as a place filled with cliques and elite social groups. Franzen wrote that the Webster Groves in the documentary was not at all like the “…friendly, unpretentious town I knew…” Webster Groves, Missouri had another chance to be on television in 1974 when NBC chose Webster Groves as the sight for the show Lucas Tanner. After the shootings at Columbine High School in 1999, Webster Groves High School was profiled by Time magazine.
Gerry Welch was elected mayor in Webster Groves in 2010 and serves with the Webster Groves City Council to run the government of Webster Groves. Webster Groves offers much to its residents and visitors including Eden Theological Seminary, Charles W. Ferguson House, Hawken House, Gorlock Building and Opera Theater of Saint Louis. Other favorite destinations for the people of Webster Groves include The Repertory Theater of Saint Louis and the Edgewood Children’s Center.
