Mount Vernon, Illinois got its start in 1817 when Zadok Casey, a Methodist minister settled in the area that would later be known as Jefferson County. Casey became a State representative in Illinois in 1822, moved on to Lieutenant Governor and later to State Senator.
Mount Vernon started out as just a few simple buildings on land that had been donated by Casey. There were plans to name the town Mount Pleasant, but it was popular at the time to name towns after heroes of the Revolutionary War. Mount Vernon was named to honor Washington and became the county seat of Jefferson County.
The railroad came through Mount Vernon in 1872 and helped the town to grow. Some of the other industries that provided employment in the late 1800’s were foundries, breweries, carpentry and mills. Mount Vernon was hit by a tornado in 1888 that destroyed more than five hundred structures including the Jefferson County Courthouse.
Clara Barton visited Mount Vernon at this time, representing the Red Cross and bringing supplies to help the community, and soon the people of Mount Vernon were ready to rebuild their town. They rebuilt their town bigger and better, adding an Opera House that claimed to be the finest in all of southern Illinois. The Carnegie Library opened in 1904. These and other accomplishments soon gave the town of Mount Vernon a reputation as the “King City”.
The Mount Vernon Car Manufacturing Company started in 1914 and remained the community’s largest employer for the next sixty-three years. They built railroad cars of all kinds, fifty per day, and employed 2300 people.
Visitors and residents can learn about the history of the area by visiting the Jefferson County Historical Village.
Today, Mount Vernon still invites businesses to come, offering transportation routes for commerce along I-57 and I-64.
