Maryville, Illinois has a long history with evidence in the rock shelters along the Mississippi River, burial remains and stone artifacts that show human life as far back as 8000 BC. Many of these cultures had disappeared by the sixteenth century.
The first European expedition was led by Frenchman, Louis Jolleit and missionary Father Jacques Marquette in 1673. Father Marquette returned in 1675 to start a mission. Over the next century and a half, there would be many battles over this land between the Native Americans, the French and the British and then between the people of Virginia, Kentucky and Illinois.
By 1840, things had settled down and German farmers began to move into the area of Pleasant Ridge. Today, Pleasant Ridge road runs adjacent to this location in Maryville, where St. John Lutheran Church stands. In 1847, the German settlers at Pleasant Ridge brought Pastor Lochner to their church which now had twenty one families. In 1848, they opened the first school in Maryville at Pleasant Ridge with eighteen students. The current St. John Lutheran church of Maryville was built in 1859. Visitors to Maryville, Illinois can see the original St. John Lutheran church and school still standing across the street.
Settlers built businesses around the church, near the current intersection of Pleasant Ridge and West Main Streets in Maryville. The current home of St. John’s pastor was originally a blacksmith shop. Other businesses included a tavern, shoe shop, general store, post office and bandstand.
In 1865 the people of Maryville voted to allow black children to attend the Pleasant Ridge School. Twenty-three years later, the railroad would come through Maryville, and eight years after that the Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church was built.
In October, 1900, C.W.F. Lange dedicated a parcel of land for public use. Maryville would incorporate with that land and be named after his wife Mary.  Maryville, Illinois was connected to St. Louis on October 28, 1901 when the St. Louis and Interurban Railway Company extended electric car service to them.
The town of Maryville did not grow rapidly over the next six decades, and claimed a population of 850 by 1968. At this time, the Maryville Police Department had one employee. In 1970, the Borri subdivision, now Bauer Lane, was built in Maryville. The current school Maryville West opened in 1971 and by 1973 the population of Maryville had doubled to 1700. Five years later, the first hospital opened.
Towards the end of the 1970’s, Nottingham Estates was built, adding many more homes to the area. A city park was added and improved in Maryville during the 1980’s. In 1990, the Village of Maryville used a grant to purchase $12,000 worth of playground equipment. A few years later, Maryville added more playground equipment and two pavilions in the Village parks.
Growth throughout the area has brought more people to Maryville, Illinois over the past thirty years. Maryville, Illinois now claims a census of over six thousand.
