Kirkwood, Missouri is a suburb of Saint Louis. Kirkwood started out as a planned suburb in 1853, one of the first of its kind to the west of the Mississippi River. The Pacific Railroad was being built through the area when Kirkwood was being planned and it played a part in the planning and development of the city of Kirkwood. James Pugh Kirkwood was the chief engineer for the Pacific Railroad during the time that the city of Kirkwood was being planned. James Pugh Kirkwood was responsible for the development of the section of railroad construction that ran from Saint Louis, Missouri to Pacific, Missouri. When the city of Kirkwood was established in 1853, it was named after this railroad engineer.
Kirkwood, Missouri takes up a land mass of about nine square miles. The city of Kirkwood has a population of just under thirty thousand people living in this area in the western section of Saint Louis County. The planned city of Kirkwood was developed to be run by a mayor and a six member city council.
The plan for the city of Kirkwood started with the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, when the area was bought by the United States from France. The first home in the area that would become Kirkwood was built in 1808. The first home in Kirkwood was a log house on Hill Drive.
In 1849, the cholera epidemic in Saint Louis drove the residents in the area to look for homes outside the city; they looked for suburbs like the one that would be built in Kirkwood in 1853. Kirkwood, Missouri was chartered as a town in 1865. The same year that the city of Kirkwood was chartered, the people of Kirkwood also chartered the Kirkwood School District.
The Pacific Railroad was coming through the area at this time and Kirkwood built their first train station in 1893. After the development of the Kirkwood Train Station, it took only six years for Kirkwood to reach a point where it was classified as a city. Over the next fifty years, the city of Kirkwood added a sanitary sewer system, Kirkwood Public Library, Kirkwood City Hall and the Kirkwood Chamber of Commerce was formed.
In 1954 Brown versus the Board of Education was ruled on by the Supreme Court and Kirkwood School District enrolled black students for the first time.
The city of Kirkwood opened the Kirkwood Community Center and Ice Rink in 1966. During that same year, the city of Kirkwood began to offer fire protection to its citizens after a fire in the city took the lives of five children.
The Interstate Highway Act was passed in 1968 and the construction of Interstate 44 was started. The new highway went through the city of Kirkwood and Meacham Park. The city of Kirkwood continued to grow and they started a Kirkwood Farmer’s Market opened in 1976. By 1991, the city of Kirkwood was able to annex Meacham Park after approval of the voters.
