Highland, Illinois was founded by pioneers from Sursee, Switzerland in 1831. Highland is one of the country’s first Swiss settlements. With Dr. Kasper Koepfli as their leader, the Swiss pioneers established a community called New Switzerland. Highland, Illinois and Sursee, Switzerland became ‘sister cities’ in 1976. Scottish General Joseph Semple convinced the Swiss settlers that the area most closely resembled Scotland, and so in 1836 they agreed to change the name from New Switzerland to Highland.

At first the community was isolated, a three day trip to St. Louis. When Joseph Suppiger built a mill to grind corn and wheat, farmers came. In 1843, Congress planned to build a road from Vandalia to St. Louis. The federal government offered to run the road through Highland if the villagers of Highland would build the section from Troy to Pocahontas and they did. The population of Highland went from one hundred twenty people before the road to over five hundred people after the road was built.
